Defiance on Hill 30 (version 1.0)

NEAR PONT L'ABBE, 8 June 1944: A bad drop prevented the 508th Parachute Regiment from securing any of its first day objectives along the Douve River. The best effort was made by an ad hoc group of roughly two companies under Lt. Colonel Shanley whose drive toward the bridge at Pont L'Abbe was stopped cold by a battalion of the 1057th Grenadier Regiment. Thus rebuffed, the paratroopers fell back to the high ground overlooking the Chef-Du-Pont crossing where they were surrounded and constantly harassed for the next two days. The key element of the position was a standing patrol in a farm and road junction at the bottom of the hill, blocking the road from the west to the bridge. At dawn on June 8th the Germans made their most determined effort to take it.

AFTERMATH: The German attack made great progress and was about to wrest control of the crossroads from the standing patrol until a platoon led by Shanley himself came down the hill to take the enemy in the flank. Hill 30 remained cut off until the 10th when the rest of the 508th crossed the Merderet at La Fiere and made contact with Shanley on his north flank. Despite not seizing their D-Day objectives, Shanley's defiant stand on hill 30 helped enable the overall American airborne effort to succeed.

[DESIGNERS NOTES VER. 1.5]: While ASL scenario 11 was used to make this scenario, the map to board 4 was changed to flow with the story of the scenario and not to just make it an exact copy. Also I have come to the conclusion that the ASL maps just do not look good taken straight into CM. They are too barren and lifeless. So with that in mind I have "filled in" the map as it were, to make it look more realistic. Also the US reinforcements have a chance to arrive earlier, the US forces are weary now instead of exhausted, and both forces start closer to each other with a more limited deployment area for the Germans. The design notes from Col. Klotz's "ASL Maps for CM" web page were used to help me make this scenario. Also the computer does an admirable job on both the defense and the attack. However it is recommended that the first time you play with the AI as the Americans you do not allow the computer to change the setup. It does a good job defending in the default setup, but results vary when allowing it to alter from the default. One thing is for sure; you are in for one bloody little fight. Enjoy!
